Apple The Child Study Team is Here and Available at

Stony Creek Elementary School!

The goal of the Child Study Team is to maximize individual student achievement.  We ask, “What can we do to increase this student’s chances for success?”  Any student experiencing academic or behavioral problems may be a candidate for the Child Study Team.

Students can be identified for this program by classroom teachers, other educators and parents.  For further information about the Child Study Team process, or to recommend a student, call the Stony Creek Elementary School office at 215-619-8108.

AppleStudy Skills

Good study skills can be the key to a child’s school success.  Study skills are the tools by which a child can increase the amount of information learned at school and establish the discipline necessary for work-related skills.  Parents can help children develop good study skills by encouraging the following:

1. Know exactly what you need to do.  Write down assignments, directions, and due dates before you leave class.  Ask for help if you do not understand the assignment.

2. Be prepared.  Make sure you arrive home with the textbooks, papers, etc., to complete the assignment.

3. Plan your study time.  Parents play a crucial role in this aspect of developing good study skills.  Try to maintain a set study time each day but be flexible enough to allow for outside activities.

4. Select a good place to study.  It is best to work in a quiet area that is free of distractions.  A table or desk is best for completing written work.

5. Try to avoid interruptions when studying.  Take messages for phone calls if necessary.

6. Be organized.  Make sure you have pencils, paper, dictionary, etc., handy.  Keep a notebook and a home file for each subject.

7. Plan ahead.  Know when long term assignments are due along with tests and projects.  Begin studying for a test ahead of time.

8. Be neat.  Homework worth doing is worth doing well.

9. Parents and children should interact during study time.  Parents can help when necessary and check work when students have questions.

AppleFinding the Best Place to Study

Parents commonly ask how they can help their child with homework.  In most instances simply supervising homework will be sufficient.  The supervision of a student’s work at home begins with providing a place to study that enhances the learning process.  What are the best conditions?  The assessment below can help parents determine whether the location chosen for study is appropriate.  Read through the assessment, using a “+” if the statement applies to an area chosen for study, and a “-“ if it does not apply.

_____1.  Area if free from distractions

_____2.  Lack of interruption from T.V., radio, or phone

_____3.  Proper ventilation, not too hot or cold

 _____4.  Comfortable desk, writing area

_____5.  Study materials are readily available

 _____6.  Proper lighting

_____7.  Out of family traffic pattern

_____8.  Feel comfortable with area as place for study

Evaluate this assessment by counting the “+” and “-“ columns.  If more than two (2) columns contain a “-“, reevaluate the choice of a study area.

Finding the best place to study is an important beginning to the homework battle.  Once this is accomplished it is necessary to organize the time and materials to get started.  As a child deals with homework, parent support becomes essential.  Encourage your child to do his/her best by helping in all aspects of the study process.
