Ms. Judith Gordon
Ms. Judith Gordon
Ms. Gordon has been teaching in Wissahickon School District since 1975. She holds a B.F.A. in Art Education from University of Massachusetts where she was a Massachusetts Commonwealth Scholar and a Masters of Education from Marywood University. While certified K-12, Ms. Gordon has taught at a variety of elementary schools within our school district during her career. Ms. Gordon has taken on many roles over the years contributing to children's education at the building and district level. This year she is involved in the Mentoring Program and school publicity. She looks forward to an exciting year in art this year. Ms. Gordon's goal is to create a nurturing environment where students develop self-confidence and success in art as well as winning work habits.
Art Curriculum
Our District Art Curriculum is based on four areas: Art Production, Art Appreciation, Art History and Art Criticism. The curriculum emphasizes the elements and principles of design. The curriculum is matched to National Art Content Standards and supports curriculum areas of the general classrooms. Please go to this link for a detailed description: wsdweb.org/wsdstand/artk-8.pdf
Volunteers
Volunteers are welcome to help in the art classroom with art classes and to
help with preparations for the District Art Show. Ms. Gordon would especially
welcome an Art Show Co-Coordinator volunteer.
When visiting the art room, please be sure to stop in the main office to sign
in and to receive a visitor's pass.
Special Events and Activities
The Annual District Art Show will be held on May 17th and 18th
from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. in the circular gym at Wissahickon High School. The
District Art Show, which showcases the art curriculum, is an inspiring event
that shows the breadth and depth of study available to students K-12.
Since there is not room for all students to have work in the District Show
every effort is made to display student work at Stony Creek throughout the
school year.
Are you helping your child be a confident artist?
How are you in helping your child build confidence in his/her
art skills?
Here are some ideas to consider.
I provide a comfortable workspace to do art projects.
I make time to do art projects with my child.
I encourage my child to do something creative for at least fifteen minutes
daily. Practice builds "art muscles".
I provide a variety of supplies with which my child can experiment.
I reserve criticism and encourage hands on learning from experience.
I encourage imagination and the flow of ideas rather than a perfect product.
We visit an art museum, gallery or an art exhibit a few times each year.
When reading with my child, we take time to discuss the
illustrations.
I ask my child to tell me about the art work she is doing. She gets more confidence
by teaching me.
I have a space in my home to display my child's art work.
We visit art museum sights on-line and discuss what we like.
